There are lots of stories about the birth of jazz and the beginning of rock n’ roll, but hip-hop has founding fathers: one of them is DJ Grandmaster Flash…
DJ Grandmaster Flash and his group the Furious Five were hip-hop’s greatest innovators, transcending the genre’s party-music origins to explore the full scope of its lyrical and sonic horizons. He invented the Quick Mix Theory, by the end of the 70s, Flash had started another trend that became a hallmark of hip-hop: emcees asked to rap over his beats.
He started his own group, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Their reputation grew up around the way the group traded off and blended their lyrics with Flash’s unrivalled skills as a DJ and his acrobatic performances—spinning and cutting vinyl with his fingers, toes, elbows, and any object at hand.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five went Platinum with their single, “The Message.” Meanwhile, the single “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel” introduced hip hop DJing to a larger listening audience than it had ever known before; it became the first DJ composition to be recorded by a DJ. The group’s fame only grew with “Superappin,” “White Lines” “Freedom,” “Larry’s Dance Theme,” and “You Know What Time It Is.” Punk and new wave fans were introduced to Flash through Blondie, who immortalized him in their hit, “Rapture.”
The rock n’ roll establishment also recognized Flash with an honor no one else in hip hop has received: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first hip hop group ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Flash is also the only hip hop DJ to ever receive that honour. Although Flash has been in the business for many years, he shows no sign of slowing down: this coming year promise, a new album, and he will began his descent from the analog vinyl world of DJing to enter the digital world of DJing.
MCM originally was the front man for 1990s UK Hip-Hop group Caveman. In the 1990s Caveman gained notoriety for becoming one of the few UK rap acts of that era to have been picked up by a US record label (Profile Records, 1990). Caveman was considered one of the pioneer UK Hip Hop acts of the Golden Age. MCM will be doing a live performance of some of his classic tracks and a taste of new tunes from his 2011 album “The Gospel: The Missing Link Gems Of MCM Caveman (1994-2011)” plus a DJ set.
Juice Aleem, after putting years of energy into the Birmingham Hip Hop scene, Juice’s “Ghetto Grammer” Freestyle rap sessions started featuring such other future stars as Ty, Skinnyman and MPHO. In 1996 Will Ashon starts up his new Ninja Tune backed label Big Dada and plans a roster of performers. Ashon is impressed with Aleem’s music and agrees to have him on board. Juice Aleem release “First Lesson” and “Jerusalaam Come” on Big Dada 1n 2009.
Music provided by Turntablist crew A Few Good Men
(Roc 1, Psykhomantus, Rhize) & featuring special guest Miss C Brown (of One’s & Two’s) playing classic Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Breaks.
