SUBSTANCE THROWBACK
@HARE& HOUNDS: SUBSTANCE THROWBACK : POSTPONED
What is or was Substance? i hear some of you say, around eleven years ago gave birth to the most notorious hiphop night the Birmingham and the UK has ever seen. How many of you came to the Medicine Bar for a quick drink, but ended up staying the entire night listening to quality hip-hop funk and soul?
Originally, a electic student night hosted by CHRIS READ but after combining minds with ROC via a mutual friend, it became a 80 to 90% hiphop driven sucess. The night's unique attributes like Turntablism and open mics were its special weapons but not forgetting the host and peoples champ MADFLOW(Big Dada) and on Percussion MAGOO(overproof) and on the later part OVERSIZE.
The night became a landmark for hiphop: bringing a array of DJs, Emcees and groups, national and international such as BIG DADDY KANE,MUD FAMILY, BLADE, MASTA ACE, DE LA SOUL, JERU THA DAMAJA, DJ PREMIER,MR THING, DILATED PEOPLES, SLUM VILLAGE, KRS ONE, TY, RODNEY P, PHARCYDE, DJ CASHMONEY, MIXMASTER MIKE to name but a few, more importantly quality music to the Second City.
The beauty of the SUBSTANCE COLLECTIVE was that added a unique flavor of vibe, knowlegde, talent and skill that other nights didnt have and later tried to duplicate, eventually the night came to a end but the legecy still remains.
This month, as a celebration A FEW GOOD MEN are bringing back a snipplet of those momentus years, with added assistance from MADFLOW(Big Dada) and THE MIGHTY MAGOO(Overproof) to create a night of pure hiphop with a live element aswell as the team on 4 turntables doing what we do best.
So if you were at Med bar religiously each Thursday night, then monthly Saturdays, come and enjoy a glimpse of SUBSTANCE for one night, if you didnt, come and enjoy A FEW GOOD MEN rippin it up six deck style..
