Formed in the early 90s, Slum Village was a product of the same bubbling Motown hip hop community that spawned Eminem. Though the outfit was raised on the music of Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, it was their early producing collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest that eventually propelled them into the limelight. Boasting guest appearances from Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dawg, Posdnous of De La Soul, Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry and Dilla's little brother Illa J, their new album Villa Manifesto expands on their classic smooth-yet-street sound to lay to rest the ghosts of recent years - it’s dark, with a digital soul flavour, and tense, complex lyrics.
